Environmentally Challenged is an application designed to encourage little actions all of us can take every day to reduce our carbon footprint and raise awareness of the environment.

The challenges encourage small, achievable daily actions that accumulate to bring about bigger actions or initiatives, like planting trees, litter or water cleanups. It was created as part of the BBC Step into Tech course.

01 The idea

Our team wanted to tackle the climate issue by raising awareness of how individuals can impact the environment through small, everyday actions. Each day the app offers the user a challenge inviting them to change to a daily habit. Completed challenges render as a circle-progress-bar and accumulated achievements bring about bigger actions or initiatives, like tree plants, litter or water cleanups.

Many of us are unaware of our direct impact on the environment

We want to take action on reducing our carbon footprint but don't know how or where to begin, and feel overwhelmed

We are more conscious of our actions if they can be quantified and measured

We are motivated when we can see the impact of our actions as part of a bigger, broader or collective response

Defining the MVP

Goal. The user can see a goal and results for cumulative, successful daily actions.

Action. Each day the app offers the user a challenge, inviting them to make a change to a daily habit.

Progress and Impact. The user can see and track their achievements, progress, and impact of their actions.

Further development and considerations for a commercial product:

Earn Rewards. Users receive rewards or incentives for successful actions and achievements towards reducing their carbon footprint.

Sign-up. Users can sign up, register and create a profile.

Personalisation. Users can choose their goal, area of impact, or an initiative they would like to support.

Key achievements and takeaways

We applied Agile methods, sprints and retrospectives to inform our process. We were able to effectively apply the design sprints process to identify issues, discuss and ideate solutions, prototype and implement the final product.

Executed end to end. We were able to code the final design and test different concepts in a short period of time, demonstrating our ability to execute and ship features effectively as a team.

Successful delivery. Each team member was able to contribute to the idea and solutions, which resulted in a collaborative, fun and impressive result.
